What to do in Southampton

Southampton

Why not immerse yourself in the city's unique history by joining a Heritage walking tour of Old Southampton. 90 minute tours of the old Norman Town include the gates, walls and unique medieval vaults take place through out the year. From being a point of contact between England and the Norman kings' lands in France, by the end of the 14th century Southampton had to be defended against attack from across the sea. A guided walk around the walls offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the people who lived and loved, worked and fought in the medieval town. The town has more medieval vaults than anywhere else in England - a truly atmospheric experience. Prices and timings are available at the Tourist Office opposite the Civic Centre.

The maritime links still flourish. The modern Port of Southampton is equipped to host the largest vessels from around the globe. Mayflower Park (located opposite Southampton Maritime Museum) is an ideal location to watch the coming and going of everything, from ferries to cargo ships to luxury cruise liners.

If you would like to view the ships from the water, there are tours around the harbour leaving from Ocean Village. Blue Funnel Cruises regularly runs short cruises lasting from one to three hours so that you can explore Southampton from the water.

Southampton Maritime MuseumSouthampton Maritime Museum Based in a 14th Century former Wool house the museum displays a permanent Titanic exhibition, 'TITANIC - Southampton Remembers' which recounts the stories of the crew members who lost their lives, a very large number of whom came from Southampton. The exhibition uses archive film footage, interviews with survivors and unique artefacts to provide an insight into the tragic loss of the Titanic and why the disaster continues to fascinate, 95 years after she went to her watery grave.

Around the corner in front of the current Red Funnel car park and beside the city walls is Southampton Old Green which is reputed to be the oldest Bowling Green in the world. The Old Green has been used to play the game of bowls since prior to A.D.1299. Many of the customs of the "Old Green" have disappeared with the years, but there is one which has been faithfully observed annually since it was inaugurated on the 1st August 1776. This is the Knighthood Competition. All members of the Club who have not previously won the competition (Gentlemen Commoners), are eligible to take part, with all previous winners (Knights) acting as organisers and controllers of the game. Aficionados of the game may be interested to know that the game is played over the whole of the green and it is not restricted by the rink line and boundaries.

From bowls to football

St Mary's StadiumSt Mary's Stadium is roughly a 15 minute walk from the hotel and is home to Southampton Football club. Saints' fans may be interested in a stadium tour given by an official Saints' guide. You'll get to experience how it feels to be 'backstage' before a match - everything from a visit to the players' dressing rooms and baths ( empty during the tour) to standing at the tunnel entrance waiting for kick-off. Tours are reasonably priced and last approximately 1.5 hours. Memorabilia is available. To buy.

Industry in the city isn't just maritime associated. Hampshire and the Solent area have also been at the forefront in the field of aviation since the early 20th century.

10 minutes walk from St Mary's is the Solent Sky Museum.

The Museum tells the story of 26 aircraft companies, the largest flying boat operation in the world and in particular the legendary Spitfire designed at Supermarine by R.J.Mitchell in the heart of the City of Southampton. The museum has the task of preserving British Aviation Heritage with one of the most important aircraft collections in the UK on display.

Fun further afield.

Marwell Wildlife ParkSouthampton is lucky to have marvellous Marwell Wildlife just up the road off junction 11 of the M3. You should plan to spend at least half a day here. This 140 acre park is dedicated to the preservation of 180 exotic and endangered species from the threatening sounding Hissing Cockroaches to the Laughing Kookaburras. This is a truly inclusive day out for all members of the family. Apart from the truly awe-inspiring and sometimes humour inducing wildlife, Marwell has three play areas where children can run wild while you take a well-earned break at one of the strategically placed refreshment areas. There's also a free road train to help you get around if you're in need of a rest. Marwell also has a Changing Places toilet facility which caters for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well as other serious impairments such as spinal or brain injuries - one of only 23 such facilities in the South East - so no one needs to miss out on the day.

Peppa Pig WorldIf you have pre-school children who are more interested in animals in a cartoon form then Paulton's Theme Park should definitely be on your agenda. The Park is home to Peppa Pig World, the world's first Peppa Pig theme park - a must for all Peppa fans with 7 rides tailored to this age group alongside all things Peppa - gifts, refreshments etc. ( If you become Pigged out )- More daring rides and attractions for any older children are also available around the park . National Motor Museum at Beaulieu

BeaulieuBeaulieu is a guaranteed great family day out with lots for everyone to enjoy including the world famous National Motor Museum incorporating the world of Top Gear and the James Bond vehicle exhibition. Other attractions include Palace House, home of the Montagu family and the historic 13th century Beaulieu Abbey. You can also learn about the hidden role that Beaulieu played in the training of World War 2 secret agents of the Special Operations Executive.

After a day out with the children you may be in need of some exclusively adult time.

Back in the city centre you'll find the Mayflower Theatre - the largest theatre in the South. The theatre is lucky to be big enough to be able to host the most spectacular musicals - many direct from the West End - without having to downsize the cast numbers and the experience. The theatre has a restaurant for pre or post show dining which can be booked in advance and children are, of course, welcome too.

Southampton Guildhall opposite the hotel also hosts live music concerts, comedy acts and diverse exhibitions. The line-up varies from week to week so it's best to book in advance for specific acts you want to see.
